CHAPTER TWELVE
Lady Harper didn’t show up at breakfast the next morning. Vance insisted on an early start, though none of us had slept much. The quicker we got this excursion into the woods over with, the better. While Vance got updates from the mages patrolling, Isabel and I stocked up on spells. The point-and-shoot explosives were pencil-shaped and I could easily fit six or more into my coat pocket. I added in as many healing spells as possible, hoping I wouldn’t need them.
Isabel hung up the phone. “The coven knows where we’re going.” She yawned. Dark shadows underscored her eyes. She’d been up half the night making a new batch of spells. “They’ll be on the lookout for anything odd.”
“No new reports.” Vance walked into the living room to join us. “Three mages reported seeing several figures in black and followed them for half a mile before realising they were necromancers.”
“Figures. They’re not coordinated enough to be assassins.”
“That’s why we don’t wear capes.” Isabel gave a strained smile. “Maybe the Hemlock Coven does. And the pointy hats. All rumours start somewhere.”
“I did wonder where the pointy hat thing came from. Guess it’s time to see what they know.”
Just as long as Lady Harper hadn’t intended to send me to my death. No, even she wouldn’t be that petty. Whatever reason the witches had sworn her to secrecy, I’d pry the truth from them.
Vance had selected three swords of his own, which he sheathed in a weapons belt securely fastened underneath his coat. The tip of the mage mark on his shoulder was visible under the collar of his black shirt. “Ready?” he asked Isabel and me.
Isabel nodded. She wore jeans, and dark colours rather than her usual bright attire. Though her baggy coat seemed unremarkable, I’d seen her pack a dozen spells inside the pockets to draw at a second’s notice.
“Are you sure about leaving Drake in charge of security?” I asked Vance after he’d transported us to the fence where trees grew thick, blotting out the inside of the forest.
“No,” said Vance. “Everyone’s more or less responsible for their own safety when patrolling, so I’ll humour him. Drake’s one of the most powerful mages, so if an assassin did attack him, it’d likely be the worse for them.” A worried undercurrent to his words reminded me that it didn’t matter how strong the target was. Even though I was immune to their bullets, Vance wasn’t, for sure. As a part shifter, he was likely twice as vulnerable. Yet his own magic had worked against the assassins. So had mine, aside from that weird moment where it’d been dulled during the fight.
I kept my sword out as we walked to the fence’s end. Most of the creatures who lived in the forest would be pure fey, too savage to live amongst humans.
“So the Hemlock Coven have lived in the forest all along without anyone knowing except Lady Harper?” I glanced sideways at Vance as the fence ran out at the road’s end, where a sprawling tree marked the entrance to the woods.
